Upon graduating San Diego State University with a degree in Sports Facilities Management, Mr. Werner  was hired in 1981 by the City of San Diego, Parks and Recreation Department to work in the Balboa Park Management Center where in addition to overseeing the recreational facilities and sports programs, he also acted as the City Liaison for major Special Events, Concerts, and Festivals.

In 1985, Werner was given the opportunity to work at the famed Kona Kai Club and Resort in San Diego, where he introduced numerous innovative programs that helped reposition the resort and club. Werner's initiatives increased monthly membership sales from $9,000.00 per month to over $150,000.00 per month over a three year period. During his tenure, he also oversaw the renovation of the club, restaurant, and marina facilities and was responsible for the construction of the spa and fitness center and the formation of the Kona Kai Yacht Club.

After leaving the Kona Kai Club, Werner worked for several well known West Coast based hospitality management companies from 1989 to 1994 where he held senior level positions in Resort and Sports Marketing, Country Club Management, and Resort and Hotel Development. It was during this period he began a long term relationship with R&R Hotel Group which he still enjoys today.

In 1994, a group of prominent Mexican business leaders recruited Werner to be General Manager of the El Cid Golf & Country Club in Mazatlan, Mexico. During his tenure, Werner steered the club back to profitability and oversaw the day-to-day operations of the 18 hole golf course and country club amenities, membership sales and activities, food and beverage operations, and golf and tennis tournaments and operations.
